The Safety Officer, Atlantic Canada will be responsible to provide support for operational compliance with all employees located at our 7 airport locations in Atlantic Canada. Areas of focus will be ensuring the implementation of health, safety, security and environmental policies, collaborative development of standard operating procedures (SOP’s), and supporting a compliance program focusing on audits, emergency response management, training and continuous improvement through training and programs.

Main accountabilities include:
  • Ensure investigations take place into any incident/accident, non-conformity, or service delivery failure, with resulting corrective actions being established and maintained.
  • Implements continuous improvement initiatives including hazard identification, risk assessments, mitigation measures to be compliant, reduce risk, and raise safety awareness.
  • Ensure safety and security policies are in place & consistent standards are implemented across the network.
  • Support continuous training of station Emergency Response Plan in collaboration with corporate EH&S, local mutual aid authorities, airport authorities and contract holders.
  • Proactively promote a ‘safety first’ culture.
  • Supports our audit program to reduce compliance findings Year over Year at each Atlantic Canada station
  • Liaison with industry auditors, prepare for audits by supporting the operational team, and respond to CARS in a professional and timely way.
  • Works in collaboration with management team to develop policies and procedures, ensuring safe work practices are established to enhance operational safety
  • Reviews station employee injury and incident trends and implements corrective actions.
  • Facilitates the distribution of safety, security and environmental alerts within operations.
  • Work closely with Health & Safety Committees to implement best practices at all Atlantic region airports.
  • Liaise with the regulatory aviation authorities within region to ensure compliance.
  • Monitor changes in legislation & amend operational training requirements accordingly.
  • Facilitate the distribution of network safety and security alerts on a knowledge-sharing basis to increase awareness.
  • Develop SOPs and process documentation for best practices and safety during projects including for third-party contractors and to ensure safe operations in the region.
  • Leads by example always and provides open, honest, and direct feedback to our employees.
  • Required to attend initial FSA training, ongoing training requirements as per job role.
  • Flexible supporting operations as required acting as an ITP supervisor when needed
  • Any other reasonable duties as requested by Leadership
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Demonstrates considerable experience in the field of compliance, safety, and security
  • Demonstrates an ability to both design & deliver SOP’s.
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders and the ability to engage effectively with team members in a safety focused role
  • Facilitation skills – able to engage with teams and deliver information in an educational way and provide guidance on best practices.
  • Knowledge and experience in the aviation industry and/or oil & gas safety & compliance strongly
  • Ability to manage projects
  • Self-motivated, disciplined with a can-do attitude.
  • The ability to work in a regional environment, work closely with consortium members and airline industry members representing 7 airports with regulators, government officials and auditors.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with people at different levels.
  • Prepared to travel within operational Region and other corporate locations as necessary, to implement best practices and train teams accordingly.
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills and ability to be SME with other corporate software programs
  • Well written – clear and concise in documentation and SOP, policy writing, reporting and procedures.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Well organized and able to manage various directives simultaneously.
  • Must be legally able to work in Canada, acquire and maintain all security clearances and AVOP licenses required for the role
