The FAAs Civil Aerospace Medical Institute supports the aviation safety by providing ambulatory medicine care; Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) related medical services; Compliance with Privacy Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act including Voluntary Protection; Program and Environmental Protection Agency’s Operational controls; hearing conservation, respiratory protection, blood-borne pathogens, travel medicine, hazmat programs.
Duties
The Physician performs medical care and other complex assignments under minimal supervision. The Doctor will carry out the full range of medical programs within the Occupational Health Division, CAMI, a region and/or medical field offices, often functioning simultaneously as a medical authority, educator, and represent the Office of Aerospace Medicine on Occupational Health issues.
The Physician works under the supervision of the CAMI Occupational Health division manager. The extent and frequency of review is commensurate with the rarity of medical conditions, illnesses and/or injuries encountered, the complexity of issues and/or assignments, and the Physician experience. The duties of this position involve the practice of medicine and direct "clinical" service, involving performance of diagnostic, preventive, or therapeutic services to patients in an outpatients clinic and including oversight of certified physician assistants. Additionally, service to patients in preventive medicine programs including aviation medicine, occupational health and public health. Furthermore, provides limited support for medical research and experimental work. The work of this position contributes directly to the safety of aerospace and civil aviation.
The Physician supports occupational health programs and the assignment of local resources to accomplish organizational objectives. The Physician will support the allocation of resources to accomplish work activities and provide professional medical care by performing the following:
Provides ambulatory care for 25 to 100 patients per day for the Occupational Health Division (AAM-700) of the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM), and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Work collaboratively with one or more physicians assistants, registered nurses, and support medical staff.
Provides a wide range of medical services including interim primary medical care for -2,500 FAA Academy students, OSHA-related medical services for -500 workers, aviation medicine services for -200 air crew-members as well as hypobaric (altitude) chamber support, and health promotion - disease prevention and medical consultation for -3,000 employees. Support the development and implementation of Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP) and Disaster Plans for CAMI, MMAC, and AAM in response to a potential Pandemic Flu or other significant incidents including chemical, biological, or nuclear hazards.
Monitors compliance with the proper application of the Privacy Act, American with Disabilities Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act including the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), and the Environmental Protection Agencys Operational Controls.
Supports hearing conservation, respiratory protection, blood-borne pathogens, travel medicine, and hazardous materials programs. Provides technical assistance for six collateral-duty safety and health (EOSH) practices.
Provides consultations and expert testimony on request of the Federal Air Surgeon or nine AAM Regional Flight Surgeons regarding Environmental and Occupational Safety and Health (EOSH) issues. Maintains ISO 9001 and 14001- based quality management and electronic health records systems.
Contacts are internal and external to the agency. The Physician represents the Office of Aerospace Medicine as an authoritative contact on Occupational medicine programs and activities.
Broad policies and objectives provide general guidance for addressing issues, but almost always require the development of new and innovative approaches. The Physician supports the development of new policies, procedures, and approaches, taking into consideration FAA policies, seasoned professional judgment, and government-wide regulations.
