Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Design Engineering Thermodynamics Section Manager 2. This position will be located in Roy, Utah and will support the Sentinel program.

What You’ll Get To Do:

The manager will lead a team of thermal analysis engineers and will be responsible for leading all managerial tasks relevant to thermodynamic analysis. The manager will work 80 of their time in the thermal analysis engineering discipline, as directed by the Sentinel AVE program IPT Lead. The manager will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, and facilitating communications, tasking, scheduling, and technical reviews with each individual contributor’s execution lead in Roy, UT. Their technical expertise and analytical prowess will play a vital role in thermal analysis, including Thermal Protection System (TPS) design/sizing, Transient Heat Transfer Simulations, and Active Cooling Analysis. This position invites a forward-thinking professional who is eager to tackle complex challenges and deliver innovative solutions that advance the future of thermodynamics for the Sentinel Program. Functional home room support, approximately 20 of the manager’s time will be focused on recruiting, staffing, retaining talent, weekly team meetings, bi-weekly 1:1 meetings, and holding performance review discussions. Supporting relevant Northrop Grumman Defense Systems Community of Practice is expected.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off. 

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) discipline and 8 years of experience; or Masters degree with 6 years of experience.

  • Experience in a technical leadership/management role.

  • Experience in writing and presenting technical content.

  • Must have an active DoD Secret or higher clearance (with a background investigation completed within the last 6 years or currently enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance prior to the commencement of employment. This SAP must be obtained within a reasonable amount of time as determined by the company to meet its business needs.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with adjacent disciplines (e.g. systems engineering, aerodynamics, stress analysis, design, test) in a highly integrated team environment.

  • Experience in programming and use of MATLAB (or equivalent) for analysis and data manipulation.

  • Experience with finite element method or finite difference method thermal analysis software (Thermal Desktop, and Ansys).

  • Basic knowledge of Heat Transfer methods and principles.

  • Experience modeling with commercial finite element modeling software (Femap/Nastran, Ansys, Abaqus, etc).

  • Experience working with a team that shares models, performs peer reviews, configuration management.

These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent from an accredited college/university.

  • Experience working strategic or tactical missile programs.

  • Experience with high performance computing, management of large sets of data.

  • Experience with Thermal Desktop.

  • Experience with Integrated System Level Thermal Models and/or Component/Unit Level Thermal Models.

  • Experience Correlating Thermal Models to Test Data.

  • Strong experience leading teams and training others.

  • Experience with individual contributor performance assessments.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

  • Operates independently with limited to no supervision, and the ability to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, peers, and customers.

  • Able to assimilate information from multiple sources, create coherent plans and then execute those plans.

Primary Level Salary Range: $139,100.00 - $208,700.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills and current spanet conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
