Job Summary

The ACAA’s Senior Telecommunications Engineer is responsible for designing, maintaining, and troubleshooting telecommunication systems at the Allegheny County Airport Authority.

 

Here is how the Senior Telecommunications Engineer will help:  

  • Provisioning and maintaining the communication systems at the Airport Authority, primarily the phone system for employees and tenants. This includes Cisco Call Manager maintenance, physical phone updates and management, system upgrades, and deployments.
  • Maintain and manage all wiring and cabling infrastructure including patch panels, in-wall wiring, duct banks, and device installation.
  • Responsible for documentation and maintenance of the communications database to include rack layouts/elevations, connections, pathways, and equipment installation, plus coordinate all additions and improvements to the database.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot all wireless and cellular installations across the campuses. This encompasses Cellular DAS, 4G, 5G, CBRS, and other on-site wireless devices and RF communications used by the Airport Authority.
  • Work with other departments to facilitate network communications for building management devices, industrial controls, IoT devices, and other serial communications hardware.
  • Provide a high level of technical knowledge and support required to maintain the diverse infrastructure deployed within the ACAA campus.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned or required.

Qualifications

The following requirements list the minimum education/training/experience required to qualify for this job. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be accepted.


Requirements to apply for the role of Senior Telecommunications Engineer are:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university in Information Systems, Computer Science or closely related field or equivalent work experience.
  • 5 years of experience in a telecommunications engineering role or equivalent.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to build solid relationships with business partners, documenting requirements, and guiding departments on hardware systems.
  • Possess or obtain prior to employment a valid Pennsylvania Class C driver’s license. Note: license must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Experience with infrastructure management tools such as Patch Manager, Netbox, Device42, etc. is preferred.
  • Experience working in or with highly regulated industries such as government, transportation, or telecommunications is preferred.
  • Experience configuring and maintaining VOIP systems such as Cisco UCS is preferred.

 

We also expect that candidates will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities in most cases:  

  • Familiar with all aspects of Telecommunications engineering including the design of fiber optic networks, structured ethernet cabling, VOIP, RF systems, Cellular DAS, 4G, 5G, and CBRS.
  • Excellent ability to manage Layer 1 infrastructures, their installations, and recording changes as needed.
  • Excellent and rapid communication, troubleshooting and resolve skills.
  • Strong documentation skill set, requiring a high level of detailed accuracy of data entry and record keeping for maintaining the telecommunications database.
  • Familiarity with cabling and RF standards.
  • Ability to conduct research into networking issues and products as required.
  • Ability to communicate in user-friendly language with other departments.
  • Working knowledge and hands on experience with fiber optic cabling (single/multimode), ethernet, twisted pair and coax cabling.
