Serves as an Aerospace Engineering Technician (Traveler) in the Line Maintenance Subteam, contributing on large work activities, or as a team leader for single or small work activities. May provide formal instruction to other technicians. Performs highly specialized technical work associated with analyzing, designing, developing, installing, repairing, fabricating, maintaining, modifying, or evaluating the most complex systems for which the FAA is responsible.
Duties
Technician serves as an independent contributor and contributing specialist on large projects and plans and organizes work to accomplish organizational objectives. Incumbent is responsible for troubleshooting and analyzing aircraft problems on the agencys highly complex aircraft that supports the worldwide National Airspace System (NAS).
Performs highly technical work associated with analyzing, designing, developing, installing, repairing, fabricating, maintaining, modifying, or evaluating the most complex systems for which the FAA is responsible. Troubleshoots and repairs highly complex mechanical, structural and electrical systems to correct malfunctions reported by pilots, flight inspection mission and perform tests and/or minor adjustments on the aircraft to ensure continuance of the mission. Applies broad experience and advanced technical knowledge of assigned disciplines and specialties.
Understands how assigned systems, components, and disciplines are integrated with other systems, components and disciplines. Assists the structural and the flight inspection engineering teams with the development of prototypes, production drawings, and specifications for use in the fabrication, installation, modifications, and testing of complex mechanical, electrical and flight inspection systems and fleet installations. Incumbent must possess advanced technical experience with General Electric (GE) CF34 engines, Proline 4 and/or Proline 21 experience. This position requires a current FAA Airframe and Powerplant Certificate in accordance with 14 CFR 65.83.
Applies broad experience and advanced technical knowledge of regulatory guidelines and the Aircraft Maintenance Directorate policies, practices, and procedures to diagnose equipment and resolve performance discrepancies on the multi-system Flight Program Operations platforms. Estimates and reports on expected time of work completion and maintains records of work accomplishments and time expended. Interprets complex diagrams, engineering specifications, manufactures manual.
Uses knowledge of mechanical and electrical theory and in engineering functions (e.g. design, development, evaluation, testing, installation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment) and the system capabilities, limitations, and operations, design characteristics, and fictional use of a variety of types of models of electronic equipment and systems for flight inspection of the National Airspace System. Work is vital to the success of activities and projects critical to the safe and continual operation of the NAS, FAA aircraft, and/or FAA academic programs.
Provides general and technical direction to one or more equal graded or lower graded technicians. Provides necessary on-the-job (OJT) training and guidance. May develop guidelines for the use of other technicians and may be assigned to critique other technicians to assure their work meets specifications. Accompanies aircraft on flight test, when required, to evaluate the mechanical, electrical and/or flight inspection systems performance and perform minor maintenance functions while airborne.
May be required to work rotating shifts to include nights, days and/or weekends, and work in other components of the organization or geographic locations. May be physically required to perform heavy lifting and carrying 45 pounds or more, pulling hand over hand, pushing, reaching above shoulders, walking, standing, crawling, and kneeling for extensive periods of time. The employee must at all times observe the highest health and safety standards. Must be alert to the hazards of working in close proximity of live aircraft.
Frequent domestic and international travel in support of the FAA Flight Program aircraft is required. May serve as a passenger on FAA Flight Program aircraft, and may be required to possess a third (3rd) class medical certificate.
